Dog Welfare Watch
Dogs have been part of human lives for thousands of years, yet far too many still suffer from neglect, cruelty, and systems that fail to protect their physical, behavioral, and emotional wellbeing.
For generations, much of our collective effort has focused on responding after dogs are already in crisis. Rescue, sheltering, adoption, and enforcement against serious cruelty are vital, but they cannot, on their own, address the conditions that allow harm to continue.
Dog Welfare Watch is Defend Them All’s initiative to examine the laws, policies, institutional practices, human behaviors, incentives, and resource gaps that contribute to poor welfare in the first place and to identify practical, lasting ways to improve dogs’ lives.
About the Dog Welfare Watch Initiative
Dog Welfare Watch starts from the premise that better human decisions can lead to better lives for dogs.
Rather than assume that one solution will work everywhere, we look at the particular challenges dogs face and the human choices, policies, practices, and systems that influence their wellbeing.
OUR APPROACH
DTA works through community advocacy, education, and legal guidance.
For dogs, this means:
-
Considering implementation and enforcement from the outset, including whether laws provide clear standards, workable authority, and the resources needed to be effective in practice.
-
Conducting legal and policy analysis to identify gaps in existing protections and opportunities for stronger, practical, and enforceable laws
-
Examining community dog management practices and alternatives to ineffective or harmful population-control measures.
-
Identifying institutional and commercial practices that contribute to poor welfare and opportunities for greater transparency and accountability.
-
Supporting humane, behavior-informed approaches to training,
-
Building public understanding of canine behavior, welfare, and the role human decisions play in shaping dogs’ lives.
